Tai Lopez

The advice itself (read, find mentors) is generic and mostly harmless, but the sales machine sells a lifestyle his own disclaimer calls non-typical. The pending SEC fraud case is an allegation, not a finding, so we score him as OVERSTATED rather than Hall of Shame; that could change with the outcome.

Strengths

• Encourages reading and seeking mentors, which is harmless advice

Weaknesses

• His site says testimonials are exceptional results and not a guarantee (S3).
• VICE reported complaints about recurring billing and cancellation on 67 Steps (S2).
• In 2025 the SEC sued over Retail Ecommerce Ventures offerings. These are allegations, not a court finding (S4).

Claims

1. partly. In the 'here in my garage' ad he says knowledge, not the Lamborghini behind him, is what matters for the good life.

   Reading and learning are fine advice, but the ad uses the car as bait for course sales. There is no evidence that buying his courses produces the lifestyle shown.

   Unverifiable. VICE noted that he has also advised people to get others to read books for them.

Public record

• 2025-09: The SEC sued Lopez, REV co-founder Alex Mehr and COO Maya Burkenroad in the Southern District of Florida (No. 1:25-cv-24356), alleging fraudulent securities offerings by Retail Ecommerce Ventures (owner of brands including RadioShack and Pier 1) from 2020 to 2022: about $112 million raised through the offerings, at least $5.9 million in Ponzi-like payments, and about $16.1 million misappropriated for personal use. These are allegations; no court has ruled on them. Lopez did not comment to CBS News. S4
• 2026-02: The Daily Caller reported the FBI had contacted investors as part of a criminal investigation. No criminal charges had been filed as of that report (February 2026). S6
• 2026-03: The SEC and all three defendants told the court they were in settlement talks and asked that the case remain administratively closed while negotiations continued. S8
• 2026-06: In a June 30, 2026 status report, the parties said they had finalized a significant portion of the key settlement terms, with one issue unresolved as to Lopez; Mehr and Burkenroad had agreed to all core terms.
