Dave Ramsey
The core debt plan is simple and has genuine behavioral research behind it, and most of the content is free. Points come off for a return assumption that flatters the future, no outcome data behind the millions claim, and a pending class action over paid endorsements.
Editorial opinion: SG Score 68 out of 100. Verdict: MIXED. This is not a customer star rating and not a finding by a court.

Strengths
- The debt snowball has real research support for keeping people motivated through repayment
- Clear, ordered steps that people can follow without a planner
- Enormous amount of free content through the show and website
Weaknesses
- The 12% return figure overstates realistic long-run growth after inflation and costs (S5).
- Paying the smallest balance first can cost more in interest than paying the highest rate first (S13).
- A listener class action over Timeshare Exit Team promotion was still pending after the Ninth Circuit rejected arbitration in 2025 (S9).
Claims
partly. The debt snowball (smallest balance first, regardless of interest rate) is the fastest way to get out of debt, because personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% head knowledge.
Research finds that closing out small accounts first helps people stick with repayment, which backs the behavioral case. But paying smallest first usually costs more interest than targeting the highest rate, and the 80/20 figure has no cited source.
partly. The historical average annual return of the S&P 500 is 10 to 12%, which he uses to project investment growth.
A simple average of yearly returns lands near 12%, but what an investor actually compounds is lower (about 9.9% since 1926 in one Forbes analysis), and lower still after inflation, fees and taxes. Planning on 12% overstates what most people will end up with.
partly. The 7 Baby Steps have helped millions of people transform their money.
Ramsey publishes no independent outcome data for the program. Meta-analytic research finds financial education effects are small and fade, though a strict, habit-based plan like his is closer to what works than most classes.
Public record
- 2023-04: Listeners filed a class action in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington against Ramsey, Ramsey Solutions and others, alleging he promoted Timeshare Exit Team (later Reed Hein and Associates) while it deceived customers. Reed Hein had settled with the Washington Attorney General for $2.6 million in 2021. Ramsey did not comment to CBS News. These are allegations, not findings. S6
- 2023-10: Judge James Robart dismissed the unjust enrichment claim in the timeshare class action but let the rest of the case proceed. S7
- 2023-12: Judge Eli Richardson (M.D. Tenn.) dismissed former employee Brad Amos's fraud claim against Ramsey Solutions, which alleged leaders falsely denied a cult-like culture; the judge found those statements were opinion. S7
- 2024-08: The Sixth Circuit affirmed dismissal of Amos's fraud claim but revived his religious discrimination claim, holding that federal law protects employees from discrimination for religious non-conformity. We found no report of a final outcome. S12
- 2025-06: A federal judge let former employee Caitlin O'Connor's religious discrimination suit proceed toward trial. She alleged she was fired after disclosing a pregnancy while unmarried; the company said she violated its policy against sex outside marriage. S8
- 2025-11: The Ninth Circuit rejected Ramsey's bid to force the timeshare class action into arbitration. The case was pending as of the most recent report we found. S9
- 2025-12: The parties in O'Connor v. The Lampo Group agreed to dismiss that lawsuit. S10
- 2025: Ramsey Solutions (The Lampo Group) agreed to a settlement fund of up to $1,091,790 in a Florida class action alleging text messages were sent without adequate do-not-call procedures under the TCPA. Lampo denies all wrongdoing; the settlement is not an admission. S11
